New Heights Festival

ImageImageImageImageImageImage  As if Seaside Heights needed another blow to the community an electrical fire started underneath the boardwalk and burned down numerous businesses. It was a sad day in a community that stuck together and was just starting to get back on track after rebuilding the town from Hurricane Sandy. It was Seaside Heights 100th year celebration and a weekend festival was planned to help celebrate a town that rose to the occasion. The fire was not going to take this celebration away, although Friday nights festivities had to be cancelled for safety reasons Saturday and Sunday’s activities went off without a hitch. I was there all day Saturday to document the activities through my lens with great pleasure. I have never been on the Seaside boardwalk before so I was unsure as to what to expect nor did I even think for a second after watching the news that the festival was still going to happen. After sitting in traffic for a while I arrived just in time for some cool attractions and music. There was one stage setup right on the beach with the cool ocean in the distance and another stage setup a few blocks down right along side the boardwalk. There were bands playing all day and night, boxing matches, skateboarding, bmx, monster trucks, surfing and a whole lot more. Vendors were setup all along the boardwalk and the people from Seaside as well as many other surrounding towns were there to support a town in need. The boardwalk was packed the entire day and all the stores were filled to capacity. The music consisted of all kinds of cool sounds some bands I am personally friends with and some bands I have seen for the first time. The music was capped off with Badfish a Sublime tribute band headlining the beach stage to a huge crowd of people chilling and dancing in the sand.

Hats off to the staff behind the 1st annual New Heights Festival for doing a kick ass job. You all deserve a pat on the back for sticking together and making this weekend happen, hopefully with more to come. All Night Jivers at The Back Room

ImageImageImageImageImageImageAll I could say is wow ! I had the pleasure of being asked to provide photo coverage for the All Night Jivers rockabilly dance party organized by Rebel Night NYC. The party is held the first Sunday of every month at The Back Room located in the lower east side of Manhattan at 102 Norfolk Street. When I first arrived I was shocked to see an address but no matching place. I was a little nervous at first but saw a young couple all dressed up open a gate and proceed to walk into a dark alley way and not return. I decided to follow and went about half way before returning to the street hoping for another sign as to where The Back Room actually was. As I returned to the street I saw a clean cut well dressed person holding a small record case. I asked if he was here for the dance party and he responded with, are you Jeff the photographer, Katie said you were coming down. I was like yes where the hell is this place, he responded this way, so through the gate and down the narrow dark alley way we went. About fifty feet or so and a few steps led us to a dark unmarked door. When my new pal opened the door I said wow this is so cool. It was like a whole different world was behind that door. From the high ceilings to the giant naked pictures on the wall I was like this is so cool. When you enter the lower level is a wide open bar with some couches against the far corners with a staircase leading up to the lounge area with more couches, chairs and barstools. The All Night Jivers party was hosted by a few cool ass DJ’s. DJ Sei, Jun and Hiromu who spun original 45 vinyl records all night long. They switched off spinning tunes as each of them wowed us with their incredible dance moves changing partners with the change of each record. There was a very mixed crowd which I love to see. Mixed ages, mixed dressed and mixed reasons for being there. Some people just walked in off the street for a drink, some came to meet friends and just chill and some came for the dance party to let loose. As a photographer I love to see the cool outfits and styles that each person sports on a night out like this. As the night went on more and more people came and everyone regardless of why they came seemed to interact and have fun with eachother. Some of them attend this event every month and some had never seen anything like it and joined in. Everyone I spoke to was so nice and cool which makes me always feel at ease at social gatherings where I did not know one person before entering the door. I was having such a great time watching the dancing and the crowd party that I didn’t want the night to end. If you are ever in the area stop in to The Back Room and enjoy yourselves. Go check out Rebel Night NYC for upcoming events and parties you won’t be disappointed, I can’t wait for the next one. The Effects of Music in my Life

Over the years especially since social media has taken over just about everything in life, I have come to realize that there are so many people out there wasting their lives away. Of course this is only my opinion and perception based on who I see, where I go and what I do. To set the record straight I have been clean and sober for almost 24 years. That’s right I haven’t drank or had any mind or mood altering substances in 24 years. I did spend most of my later teen years and into my mid twenties searching for an identity that seemed to never come. I grew up being an exceptional athlete and artist but for some reason always felt the need to prove something to everyone else except myself. Everything I did was with the hope of just fitting in. On the outside I always seemed happy and was a very social person because of my athletic ability and art but inside I was a lost soul trying to find my way. Alcohol and drugs initially gave me the false sense of happiness but ultimately took everything away. Let me also say that I do not regret anything in my past nor do I blame anyone for my past but the facts are that certain people in my life back then allowed me to make decisions and put me in situations that hurt me more then helped me. As an adult it was my responsibility to do what I needed to do to make my life whatever I wanted it to be. Searching for happiness in anyone or anything other then ourselves usually doesn’t work out in the long run. Unfortunately there are so many people that never have the opportunity to find that inner peace so I have tried to be as positive and supportive as I can when I can. I was always a music lover but back in the day I was never a fan of live shows or arena concerts, but music always made me feel good. One of my all time favorite movies is Valley Girl with a young Nicholas Cage. One scene specifically where he is driving with is valley girl down the highway in his neck of the woods, music blasting and everyone waving to him as he drove by. The smile on his face meant that if your truly happy on the inside everything seems better. The moral of that story is finding out what makes you happy and incorporating good things into your life will leave you with a feeling that no drug can replace. As a husband, parent, friend, employee I have a responsibility to be a productive member of society and a role model. I never tell anyone how to live there life because if I have the right to choose how to live mine so does everyone else but rather share my experiences with the hope that someone will decide to better theirs. As you all know my life changed again about nine years ago when I went to my first live show with my son who at the time was nine years old. For some strange reason this live show seemed very different then the few I attended when I was younger. I believe it was because back then I was searching and today I try to enjoy every moment no matter where I am or who I’m with. The more shows we went to the more I saw an opportunity to be in a position to be a positive role model for a lot of people. I realized that music and getting fucked up went hand in hand and it bothered me that so many people were never getting to actually enjoy themselves. I am not against nor do I try to stop anyone from having a good time, this is not about people who like to just chill and get their groove on. I’m talking about the people that feel the need to get so messed up that they can’t stand up straight or carry on a normal conversation and act out like assholes. I have since been to over 760 shows from local vfw shows to mainstream arena shows and everything in between. We have seen every style and genre of music and although my son is older now and has his choice of music to listen to and shows to go to we still try to share new bands we get exposed to with eachother. My website was originally designed to be able to help a lot of the younger newer bands out there busting their asses to play shows. I was watching how so many people were involved with setting up a show from the person booking the place to the event flyer to the band selection and all for each band to play a 20 to 30 minute set. Hours of work to make it happen and most of these kids were going to school and working local jobs. Photography happens to be just another passion of mine and when combined with my love for music it seemed like a win win situation. At first I was unsure about mixing the two but as you can see it has worked out. I could assure you that what I do is not with the intention to rule the world but to help myself and others understand that life is about pursuing your passions and dreams. I believe that if more people worked on their own happiness instead of telling other people how to achieve theirs this world would be a much better place.

The Front Bottoms sell out The Stone Pony

ImageImageImageImageImageThe Front Bottoms had a sold out show at The Stone Pony last night with support from Dads and Tom May from The Menzingers. The Front Bottoms a New Jersey whatever genre you want to call them band blew the lid off The Stone Pony. The passionate fans of all ages went ballistic and left craving more. The expressions on their faces as they launched themselves into the air from every angle were priceless. Tom May from The Menzingers got the ball rolling with some cool songs to pump up the crowd.Tom was followed by Dads who turned out to be a an exciting energetic band that impressed me greatly, they led the charge for The Front Bottoms who played almost two hours long. The Front Bottoms have become one of my favorite local bands that always put on an amazing show and gives their fans a night to remember. I am glad I was there to witness a great show with so many talented musicians.

Starland Ballroom a New Beginning

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jon Vena the AEG marketing director about the rebuilding of Starland Ballroom. Starland Ballroom has been my second home (some people would say my first home) for the last six or seven years and has provided my son and I with more experiences then most people will see in their entire lives. Starland Ballroom was hit pretty hard by hurricane Sandy and has been closed since. The reopening is scheduled for September 6th with a killer show that headlines The Stone Temple Pilots with Filter.

I wanted to get a behind the scenes sense of what the process was from the time the club went down leading up to the opening show, here is how it went.

What was the staffs initial reaction when they were informed that Starland Ballroom needed to be shut down for the needed repairs due to Hurricane Sandy ?

Just the visible extent of our damage made it obvious that we’d need to endure some downtime. Nearly six feet of water entered the venue, destroying most of our interior – from the wood floors and walls, to all of our electric elements. As you can imagine, running a venue of this size takes a bit more electricity and infrastructure than your standard home or business. Just the electric damage alone meant we’d be down for some time.

What was it like having to try to re assign and or cancel whatever shows you could to other venues during a time of chaos and need for many people including yourselves ?

When you talk about what happened here at Starland, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the real lives and livelihoods that were affected by the disaster. The Safety and well-being of our employees, colleagues and friends came first. Canceling shows in the aftermath of Sandy was more or less a phone call. However we worked with our friends at The Stone Pony, Pine Belt Arena, The Count Basie Theatre and The State Theatre to move those shows that could still work despite our differences from those venues, i.e.: their seats, capacities, etc. We were able to preserve shows with Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, Cody Simpson and others. In fact, our pair of Taking Back Sunday shows became one mega-event in Toms River that came to serve as a benefit for fans in that community affected by the storm.

Was there any talk about shutting Starland down and not reopening it due to the amount of damage caused by the storm ?

Never

What inside and outside sources were used to decide the outcome and improvements that are being made to the club ?

We’re very proud to say that virtually all of our reconstrution – from contracting work to interior design to plumbing, electricity and beyond – was handled by firms and workers here in New Jersey. Our Management team, most of which has been in place since Starland opened, lead the charge.

How important was it to have a top notch lineup for the first couple of months once reopened and was a lot of bands, tours contacting you to be part of the new Starland, did you at any time feel the need to win back the fans of the club ?

As you know, social media has changed everything. If I printed out every encouraging email, tweet and facebook comment we’ve received since the storm, I’d need a second Starland Ballroom to store it all. Our customers are very enthusiastic about their experiences here, so when we went offline, they held us up. Two young ladies even came and tied a get-well balloon bouquet to our front railing! I have the note they attached to it and plan on framing it to remind us of what our work means to our customers. As for the booking, i’s a mix of luck and planning. Our talent buyer, Adam Weiser, has an incredible relationship with artist reps and agents worldwide. A lot of artists chose to skip over NJ while we were down, simply because Starland is their venue of choice. Others played elsewhere – but jumped at the opportunity to return to Starland because of their previous experiences here. Over the last decade, Starland has been the venue of choice in New Jersey, and it would seem our downtime and subsequent return has only accentuated that. The DeLeo brothers in Stone Temple Pilots heard our story and wanted to be part of the celebration, while Blink 182 wanted to make Starland a part of its tour and help the local community in the process. Blink is donating a portion of each ticket sold to the Middlesex County Long Term Recovery Group, and that money will be earmarked to help families right here in Sayreville. And the guys in Taking Back Sunday, with whom we have a long friendship, were the first to let us know that they’d be back once we were up and running. True to their word, they’ll be here September 11th and 12th.

Can you describe what improvements have been made to enhance the bands, fans and staffs experiences when the club reopens ?

First and foremost, Starland is still Starland – it’s still that roadhouse feel, i’s still the same type of venue and it still carries its greatest attributes. Nonetheless, we took this opportunity to make various types of improvements. Artists will see modernized and upgraded dressing room facilities. Our staff will see new sound and lighting technologies, fixtures, and some changes to our offices. Fans will really get to experience what we think are the coolest improvements: There are some changes to the flow of the room and its layout. There are changes to the sightlines that will provide a clear view of the stage from virtually any area of the venue. The corner platforms – we added a level there and now have 4 separate, graduated floor levels to improve one’s view of the stage. The back bar has a clearer view to the stage, and our restroom facilities are now thoroughly modern. In fact, the decor throughout the building has been modernized … our walls and woodwork are all new, and our flooring is the polished type of concrete you see in fine restaurants or malls. The sound and light systems have been revamped, too – so it’s going to be a true visual and aural experience for everyone. Two other ne elements involve AEG Live’s AXS.com now handles our ticketing, while its television extension, AXS.tv, will be broadcasting select Starland Ballroom concerts nationwide. The first national broadcast is Taking Back Sunday’s September 12th performance here. Anyone with FiOS, DirectTV or the Dish Network gets AXS, and we’re hopeful it’ll come to Cablevision and Comcast soon. too.

What in your own words would you say makes Starland the kind of club it has been all these years, if I remember correctly it was voted one of the top five clubs in the country to see a show ?

That’s easy : First off, the fans and the artists. We could spend $300 zillion dollars on improvements and it wouldn’t make a single difference unless we had that fine combination of great artists and enthusiastic fans. New Jersey seems to attract both of these elements. Secondly, it’s our staff. Most of us have been here since day one, more than ten years ago. There’s a great bond of friendship here that keeps morale and enthusiasm flowing, and I think that shows in the product we put out to the public.

Maybe not initially but going forward will there be a need for increased prices of tickets, vending products and parking to keep the club operating in the green ?

We don’t anticipate passing on any marked price increases to our patrons. Ticket prices are set by the artist.

We love the feedback and response we get from out patrons. When the storm hit and word got out that the venue was nearly destroyed, we were overwhelmed at all the well – wishes and offers of help we received from customers from all over the state. Notwithstanding, there are homes just down the street from Starland that remain uninhabitable. We don’t want fans to just come to a show at Starland, we want them to spend some money in and around Sayreville and South River, and all the other communities affected by the storm : Manahawkin, the Highlands, Sea Bright, Ortley Beach, Lavalette, Union Beach – the list goes on. Bruce Springsteen had a song last year called “We Take Care Of Our Own” and quite frankly, that song will forever remind me of the way New Jerseyans responded to Superdtorm Sandy. We take care of its music fans.

I would personally like to thank Jon Vena and the entire Starland Ballroom staff for always taking the time out to make our experiences at the club life long lasting memories as well more to come.

Kaleido plays Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival 2013

ImageImageImageImageOne day last week I was at a show in Asbury Park, New Jersey at a venue called The Saint. It’s one of my favorite small old school venues around, I noticed an event flyer saying that Kaleido was playing there the next night but unfortunately I was already committed to covering the All Stars Tour in NYC that day. I contacted the band to let them know how upset I was for missing their show and was informed that they were playing the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival at PNC Bank Arts Center that weekend. I had no idea since they weren’t listed on the lineup page when I looked up set times for the festival. Kaleido was opening up the festival at 2:10 in the afternoon to kickstart the festival. Anyone who knows me knows that I support every style and genre of music and treat all bands with the same respect whether they are young, old, just starting out or a signed mainstream act.

I enetered the festival just as Kaleido started to play, I had not seen them since I met them at last years Warped Tour and fell in love with their music. At that time they didn’t even have a cd available. It was so cool to see them a year later, a year sharper, a year of being more mature and having more touring experience. Kaleido is a Rock/Pop female fronted band that bursts of energy on stage. The self titled cd has seven tracks on it : Open Your Eyes/See Through/Chasing Stars/Goodbye(One Lat Time)/Love Design/Forever Together/Jane.

The band consists of Christina Chriss – vocals/Joey Fava – drums/Cody Morales – bass/Ronnie Rosolino – guitar and Jamie Allen Burnham – guitar. Together they bring their fans such an animated live show that leaves you no doubt that they will be around for years to come.

This time around I had a chance to chill with the band after their set and it was so refreshing to just hang and chat like real people. We talked about some crazy stuff that happened during their New York stay and how they are just out there trying to put what they believe in on the table. I definitely got the sense that they were a very fun down to earth group that likes to sit around and laugh their asses off when they are not performing. I hope I have a chance to see them again but for now I will keep listening to my Kaleido cd.

Quincy Mumford and the Reason Why “It’s Only Change”

ImageQuincy Mumford and the Reason Why dropped a new album titled “It’s Only Change”on July 30th. Quincy is taking the Reason Why and hitting the road for a nice tour up and down the east coast through the month of August. When listening to the album it was so obvious to me how passionate Quincy and his band is about the music they play. Quincy’s voice is incredibly soulful and hypnotizing, it makes you want to close your eyes and zone out into dreamland. Music is about feeling it and “It’s Only Change” gives you that and more. Being a fan of numerous genres and styles of music I look for certain aspects in each. Quincy Mumford and the Reason Why create music that allows you to get your groove on. Each song on the album has a soothing sound and beat to go along with it. The album has 10 tracks :

Track 1: Change

Track 2: For You

Track 3: Under The Covers

Track 4: When You Get Back

Track 5: A Hard Place

Track 6: Time Won’t Wait

Track 7: Eventually

Track 8: Madeline

Track 9: No Love

Track 10: Baby Don’t Go

“Fight or Flight” headlines The Gramercy Theatre

ImageDan Donegan from Disturbed was sitting at home bored from not being on the road after a few months and decided that he needed to be doing what he loves to do, playing music and touring. He reached out to Dan Chandler the frontman from Evans Blue who he had met online as a fan. Since Disturbed was on a hiatus Donegan felt the need to move forward with an idea he had for a new project. This was all done without the record label or management company knowing that Donegan was writing songs and had this idea. There was no set plan but both Dan’s began sending stuff back and forth to eachother via email and would get together any chance they could when in the Chicago area. After having some solid material Donegan decided to reach out to his Disturbed brother of over twenty years Mike Wengren into the mix. They wanted this project to be about the music and nothing else. Once they had the recording process done they went to the record label and management company. This is when they realized they had something very creative and reached out to “Ra’s” Sean Corcoran and Jeremy Jayson. The first single “First of the Last” was meant to be cranked up as loud as can be, it’s one of the more driving tracks on the record according to Donegan.  There is a heartfelt acoustic ballad called “Leaving” that builds from faint strumming into a powerful chorus paying tribute to troops coming home.  The album title “Is Life By Design” was taken from the first line of the track “A Void”. The band likes to discuss conspiracy theories so the lyrics arrive from those discussions about whether our lives are designed by other groups out there or by us ourselves that is the question they often ask themselves. The band name “Fight or Flight” was mentioned by Dan’s wife during a discussion about having the ability to make certain choices in our lives regardless of who’s pulling the strings. It’s about having your back against the wall and fighting for what you believe in and have a passion for. Dan’s says you can’t please everyone you just have to come up with something your passionate about. They also mention that this is not a one time thing, it is a project they want to keep on bringing to their fans.

Before knowing about “Fight or Flight” I so this show with bands like “Anaka”, “Mindset Evolution” and “A Lesson In Violence” which are all bands I have seen and photographed before. When I learned that “Fight or Flight” was who they were I was that much more excited to be at this show at the Gramercy Theater in NYC. From the very beginning of the night you could see the energy in all the bands faces. Everyone including the fans who arrived early were so excited and pumped for this show. Every band gave it their all on stage and left the crowd screaming for more. All the bands were so cool and down to earth hanging out with the fans before and after the show signing autographs, telling stories and taking pictures. I always love seeing the interaction between the bands and the fans, it really tells me a lot about them. I hope “Fight or Flight” stays around for a long time I have definitely become a huge fan.

Rock Against Dystrophy was founded in 2009 by two brothers John “Turbo” Shatesky and Josh “Jay Scorpian” Shatesky. Both brothers have spinal muscle atrophy, one of the over 40 neuromuscular diseases. The mission of Rock Against Dystrophy is to assemble and inspire the next generation of people who want to do all that they can to make a better tomorrow for the health of children with neuromuscular diseases. Rock Against Dystophy takes on this work by producing and presenting metal and rock concerts, hosting metal and rock music related events, producing special edition albums along with creating and selling apparel and other Official Rock Against Dystrophy items. The fans, musicians and club owners who make up the Metal and Rock community have a passion for life and fun that’s just as hardcore as their passion for music. One of their biggest wishes is that all children with neuromuscular disease get to live a life that filled with fun and the ability to enjoy it all for a long time. Rock Against Dystrophy unites these passions and wishes into action. All proceeds generated by Rock Against Dystrophy’s events go to support the research projects, patient services and education programs of The Muscular Dystrophy Association. <John Shatesky, co-founder of Rock Against Dystrophy, has been a longtime fixture since 1984 on the New York City segments of The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. Turbo, as he's known in the Metal world, is the co-founder of Bullspike Radio where he also hosts a Rock and Metal show called The Asylum. Along with his radio career, John Shatesky has done freelance work in television production. Millions of people have seen his profile pieces on MDA children and families on The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. John's support for Rock and Metal has included writing reviews, promoting shows and albums and creating promotional fliers for bands and concerts. Josh Shatesky, co-founder of Rock Against Dystrophy, is also co-founder of Bullspike Radio along with his brother John. Prior to Bullspike, Josh's radio career saw him host a show and later take on the position of Rock Music Director at Brooklyn College's WBCR-FM. While attending CUNY Brooklyn, Josh studied radio production. Josh has appeared since the mid 1980's on the New York City portions of The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon to help deliver the message about the importance of the work that The Muscular Dystrophy Association performs and the medical discoveries the researchers are finding. After three years of extra-serious health challenges, Josh made a triumphant return to the telethon in 2010, surprising host and close friend Tony Orlando.

The fundraiser was hosted by Tattoo Tony founder of Under My Skin For Life. The bands that played the event was InDisguise/Beyond Visible/A Need For Reason/Devilhaus and Decypher. All the bands were happy to be part of something great and they all put on a great show. Joey James the creator of the Rock Against Dystrophy logo was on hand showing off his art talent by creating an amazing piece of art during the show. The fundraiser raised $1,165 for the organization as Turbo John continues his effort to move forward.

Amaranthe at The Gramecy Theater in NYC

ImageImageImage

Amaranthe blew through the Gramecy Theater in NYC and blew the roof off the place. Elize’s voice just penetrates the room backed up by some pretty cool musicians. “The Nexus” their new album is out now and features the hits Nexus and Burn With Me, it can be purchased at Amazon and Itunes. Amaranthe is a Swedish/Danish power/melodic death metal band that originates from Sweden and Denmark. Formed by Jake E. and Olof Morck, the project began taking shape when singers Elize Ryd and Andy Solvestrom signed on, as did drummer Morten Lowe. In April 2011 their debut album “Amaranthe” was released to worldwide acclaim, charting high in Sweden and Finland, and was the 84th most played album on Spotify in the whole world, all genres!
In Spring of 2011 they did a full on European tour with Kamelot and Evergrey, and now they set their sights on the world!

You can check out all of the pictures from the show at http://www.jeffcrespirocks.com/ under my photo galleries.
