As if Seaside Heights needed another blow to the community an electrical fire started underneath the boardwalk and burned down numerous businesses. It was a sad day in a community that stuck together and was just starting to get back on track after rebuilding the town from Hurricane Sandy. It was Seaside Heights 100th year celebration and a weekend festival was planned to help celebrate a town that rose to the occasion. The fire was not going to take this celebration away, although Friday nights festivities had to be cancelled for safety reasons Saturday and Sunday’s activities went off without a hitch. I was there all day Saturday to document the activities through my lens with great pleasure. I have never been on the Seaside boardwalk before so I was unsure as to what to expect nor did I even think for a second after watching the news that the festival was still going to happen. After sitting in traffic for a while I arrived just in time for some cool attractions and music. There was one stage setup right on the beach with the cool ocean in the distance and another stage setup a few blocks down right along side the boardwalk. There were bands playing all day and night, boxing matches, skateboarding, bmx, monster trucks, surfing and a whole lot more. Vendors were setup all along the boardwalk and the people from Seaside as well as many other surrounding towns were there to support a town in need. The boardwalk was packed the entire day and all the stores were filled to capacity. The music consisted of all kinds of cool sounds some bands I am personally friends with and some bands I have seen for the first time. The music was capped off with Badfish a Sublime tribute band headlining the beach stage to a huge crowd of people chilling and dancing in the sand.
Hats off to the staff behind the 1st annual New Heights Festival for doing a kick ass job. You all deserve a pat on the back for sticking together and making this weekend happen, hopefully with more to come.
